Transgender
Day of Remembrance 20 November 2016
On this day
those who have been murdered or died during the previous year because
they were transgender are remembered. A liturgy for a service is
available on
www.corrymeela.org/tdor2016
and on
http://www.sibyls.gndr.org.uk/documents/tdorliturgy.pdf
Tansgender people are people whose gender identity does not
fully correspond to that expected by their biological sex. This is an umbrella
term which can be expressed in different ways.
Transsexuals can be regarded as transgender people who completely identify with
the gender which is opposite to that which is expected by their biological sex.
Gender reassignment is often urgently sought. However it should be noted that
gender reassignment is not considered to be change in gender identity: instead
it is regarded as an action required to correct a biological mistake. As it is a
search for identity, no other behavioural implications are involved.
Gender and sexual variant people are fellow travellers in
their interaction with societies, and the same conflict dynamics occur. However
being transgender is not an indication of sexual orientation. As wide a range of
sexual orientations are found amongst transgender people as those which are
found in society at large.
This liturgy uses the terms transgender and transsexual because of
their common use. More specific definitions are often advocated by transgender
people.
Lists of those who have died are available at:http://www.sibyls.gndr.org.uk/documents/tdorlist.pdf
and on the Transgender Day of Remembrance website:

Sheffield
20 November at 18:00–19:30
Transgender Day of Remembrance is held every year in November to
mourn those lost to transphobic hatred and violence. These are
deaths that are largely ignored by mainstream society, but send
shockwaves through the trans community. TDOR gives us a day to
grieve, but also to celebrate the lives that have been
tragically cut short by hate crimes. Join us in Hallam Square
for a vigil to remember the members of our worldwide community
who are no longer with us. This event is open to everyone, and
allies are very much welcome. |
